(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says foreign meddling in the Middle East is the root cause of insecurity in the region.
Ahmadinejad made the remarks in New York on Friday during a meeting with Iraqi President Jalal Talabani on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly's 66th annual session.
The Iranian president said the Islamic Republic supports Iraqi independence and national solidarity, adding that regional countries can solve their problems without the interference of Western countries.
He also emphasized the need for closer cooperation to restore peace and stability in the region.
During the meeting, Talabani praised President Ahmadinejad for his speech at the UN General Assembly and described it as effective and significant.
He also lauded the Islamic Republic's contribution to the restoration of peace and security in his country and called for the expansion of Iran-Iraq relations.
The two presidents also discussed the latest regional developments and expressed hope that Iran and Iraq could take a big step for the promotion of regional stability.
In his address to the UN General Assembly on Thursday, Ahmadinejad lambasted the hegemonic powers for infringing on the rights of other nations, saying that the hegemonic powers “seek their progress, affluence, and esteem through the destruction, impoverishment, and humiliation of others.”
Ahmadinejad also called for a fundamental reform of the structure of the United Nations.
